Vent: My neighbor's swamp cooler leak ruined their patio, but I found a simple fix

I noticed a lot of swamp coolers in my area are leaking this season because people forget to check the pads. Last week, my neighbor had water damage on their concrete patio from a slow drip. I started using a vinegar solution to clean the mineral buildup in the reservoir every month, and it stopped the leaks for me. It's cheap and only takes about twenty minutes.

TRY vinegar for that nasty mineral buildup.

About that vinegar trick for mineral buildup, it's a good start but I've seen leaks come from a stuck float valve too. If the valve doesn't close right, the reservoir overflows even with clean pads. You can jiggle the float arm sometimes to free it up, or replace the valve if it's worn out. Just another thing to check before you assume it's all about the minerals.

My buddy had a similar thing happen with his roof drainage, not a swamp cooler though. His downspout was pointed right at his foundation and it washed out a bunch of soil after every rain. Took him ages to figure out why his basement smelled damp lol. He just added one of those cheap plastic extenders from the hardware store.
