Lost $200 on a bad roof patch kit from a big box store
I tried that rubberized roof patch in a bucket from Lowe's to fix a leak near my chimney. Followed the directions exactly, cleaned the area, let it dry 24 hours. First rain came two days later and it peeled right off. Had to pay a roofer 200 bucks to clean it all off and do it properly. Anyone else had a DIY roof repair fail that ended up costing more?

Yeah that rubberized patch stuff is junk. I've seen tons of people come into the store with the same complaint. Sometimes you just gotta bite the bullet and pay someone who knows what they're doing.

Totally agree with you on this one. I tried that rubberized patch stuff on a small hole in my garage roof, followed the instructions to the letter, and it was peeling off within a week. The sun just bakes it and it gets brittle, or the rain gets under the edges and lifts it right up. It's basically a waste of money and an afternoon of your time. You're better off just paying a roofer for a proper patch with the right materials, because they'll clean it right and torch it down or whatever they do. Sometimes cheaping out on a DIY fix just ends up costing you more in the long run when you have to do it twice.

Wait you actually let it dry a full 24 hours and it still peeled off? That's wild, I figured that stuff would at least hold for a couple weeks before failing.
