Spent $80 on a good headlamp before the old Sunrise Mall trip

Almost skipped it. Figured my phone light would work. My buddy talked me into getting a real one. That thing saved the whole day. We dropped down a broken escalator into the old food court basement. Pitch black. Phone light just made scary shadows. The headlamp lit up the whole room. Found old menus, a cash register, everything. Without it, we would have turned back. Anyone else have a piece of gear that made a huge difference on an explore?

My cheap flashlight died in the middle of the old steel mill and I spent twenty minutes trying to feel my way back to a doorway. I looked like a complete idiot, just shuffling around and bumping into everything. I upgraded to a decent light after that and it felt like getting superpowers. Never going back to that dollar store junk again.

Oh man, that's the best feeling! @gibson.elizabeth is totally right about it feeling like a superpower. It's not just about seeing, it's about having your hands free to climb or move stuff without dropping your only light source. I've had cheap ones fail at the worst time too, and that sudden darkness is pure panic. Good gear just lets you focus on the explore instead of fighting your own equipment.

Seriously, good lights are a game changer. You don't realize how blind you are until you have a real one.
