Hot take: The way we handle brake jobs has flipped in the last five years

I just finished a brake job on a 2019 Silverado, and it hit me how different the process is now. Five years back, the standard move was to slap on new pads and rotors, maybe turn the old rotors if they were thick enough, and call it a day. Now, with so many trucks and SUVs having electronic parking brakes, you have to put the vehicle into service mode with a scan tool before you even pull a wheel. I had a job last week where I forgot that step on a Ford Explorer and spent an hour fighting a caliper piston that wouldn't budge. The old way was mostly mechanical skill, but now you need to know the software side too. It feels like the job went from being about pure wrenching to half wrenching, half computer work. Has anyone else noticed this shift, and what scan tool are you using for these service modes?

When I checked that ancient aliens episode, the facts were right there

I was watching a show about ancient aliens and lost cities. The host made it sound so convincing with all the flashy graphics. So I paused it and looked up the real history books. Turns out, experts have known about those ruins for ages. There's no mystery, just normal human stuff. Figuring that out felt like a win against fake news. Now I skip those shows and read proper sources instead. Don't let the TV trick you into believing nonsense.

Update: Had to decide on a sketchy door interlock bypass last week.

Years ago, guys would rig it to avoid a shutdown. Now I shut it down and took the heat for delayed service.

Starting out, a rude customer was over by 5 PM. Today their complaint is still up at midnight.

You could clock out and forget about it. Now I see reviews pop up hours later, and managers expect instant fixes. It's exhausting.

Mastered fitting up a complex pipe bend today

Always struggled with offset calculations. Used to eyeball it and waste material. Saw a coworker use a string and level trick. Tried it on a job this morning. Got the bend perfect without any cuts. Saved a bunch of time and scrap. Feels good to add that to my skills.

Got a weird one from a job site this week

I packed up a full can of gray primer, sealed it, and put it in my truck bed. Next morning, it was the empty can from the day before, lid still on. The full one was back on the shelf inside the house we just finished. No one else has a key. Stuff like this makes me question what I see. Anyone have a similar small, concrete thing happen?
