Update: called the plumber before touching the valve, saved $280 in damage
My toilet in Austin kept running after a flush last Tuesday, so I was about to yank the flapper chain myself until my cousin who does HVAC told me to stop, and the plumber found a cracked fill valve that would have flooded my bathroom if I'd forced it, has anyone else had a worse DIY repair on a simple fixture than the original problem?
Tighten the packing nut on the fill valve first, most running toilets just need a quarter turn and it costs nothing to try. I learned that after replacing a whole toilet guts kit and still having the leak, then the valve cracked a week later because I over-tightened it. Do the cheap fix before you start buying parts, it saves you the headache and the money.
