Shoutout to my neighbor Frank for changing my mind about laminate

He was helping me replace a section of water-damaged floor in my kitchen last weekend. Frank pointed at his own floor, installed in 2005, and said, 'This stuff has survived three kids and two dogs, and I've never had to refinish it.' It made me realize how much better modern laminate has gotten compared to the cheap stuff my parents put in our old house in Toledo. Anyone have a specific brand they've had good luck with for over a decade?

That "survived three kids and two dogs" line is exactly what I heard from a client about their laminate last year.

Ugh, that line is such a classic sales pitch. So @jordan_young, did that client's laminate actually hold up, or did it start looking rough after a year? I'm always suspicious when the main selling point is surviving chaos, it usually means it looks cheap but won't fall apart. Makes me wonder what they're not saying about how it actually looks day to day.

Oh man, bens81, you nailed it. My sister got sold that exact line on her kitchen floor. Sure, it doesn't scratch, but after a year it just looks dull and fake, like a bad plastic tablecloth. They never mention how the "wood" pattern just sits there looking sad and shiny.
