My basement floor drain backed up during a heavy rain last Tuesday

I was down there organizing some old paint cans when I saw water starting to pool around the drain... it smelled awful. I tried a basic plunger and a 25-foot drain snake I had, but it didn't clear. The water kept rising for about an hour before it finally stopped. I'm worried the main line out to the street might have a break or roots in it. Has anyone in an older neighborhood dealt with this and found a good way to check the line without calling a plumber first?

Our 1920s house had the same issue last spring. The city actually came out and scoped the main line for free when I called about it. Might be worth checking if your town offers that.

Wait, your city did that for free? Mine would probably charge me just for picking up the phone. Good tip from @terry_lewis21 though, I should actually check instead of just assuming they'll say no. My old pipes are basically held together with hope and some questionable plumbing from the 70s.

Huh, I gotta call BS on that one. I tried that with my city after reading a story online and they told me it was my problem, all the way to the street. They said their responsibility stops at the meter, and anything on my side is on me. Guess it really depends on where you live, huh? Your 70s pipes sound like a ticking time bomb, have you thought about getting a home warranty or something?
