Neighbor's comment about my raised beds totally changed how I see them

I was out watering my veggies last Saturday when my neighbor Bob from two doors down walked over and said my raised beds looked like 'coffins for plants'. At first I was pretty annoyed, but then he explained how he builds his with a slight curve on the ends to let water drain better. Now I'm staring at my 4 straight cedar boxes and wondering if he's got a point. Anyone else ever get an offhand comment that made you rethink your whole setup?

Straight lines drain fine unless you're drowning your plants on purpose.

Drowning your plants on purpose" is a good way to put it - most problems come from people overdoing something basic. Same thing with people who overwater their lawn thinking more is better. Usually the simple methods work fine, it's the extra unnecessary stuff that messes things up.

Is it though? I feel like people get way too worked up about drainage. Sure, if you're literally flooding the pot every single day you might have issues, but a little extra water now and then probably isn't killing anything. I've got plants in pots with just a single hole in the bottom and they're thriving, no fancy drainage layers or anything. Plus, half the time when a plant looks sad from too much water it's actually just not getting enough light or the soil is compacted, not a drainage catastrophe. Seems like one of those things that gets blown way out of proportion online.
