I was totally against a fire pit until my neighbor in Phoenix built one last month.
He used leftover pavers and river rock, and now his whole family is out there every night. Has anyone else built a simple fire feature that actually gets used a ton?

Yeah, we did something similar with an old washing machine drum. Just plopped it in the gravel section of the yard. It's not fancy, but we use it almost every weekend now. What did your neighbor do for seating around theirs?

My cousin in Austin built a simple bench from leftover fence wood. It's just two posts in the ground with a plank across, but it holds up fine. That kind of basic seating seems to work best for a casual fire pit.

Okay hold on, that's fine for sitting but nobody's thinking about the heat. Wooden posts in the ground right next to a fire pit? That's a straight up fire hazard if the pit's too close or the wind shifts. I've seen a fence post smolder for hours after the fire died down because the embers got buried in the dirt right up against it. Plus if you ever want to move that bench you're digging up two holes and patching the lawn. Seems like a permanent solution for something that's supposed to be casual.
