Pro tip: The mediator told my ex and I to split the pets 50/50 and I said no way

I was sitting in the conference room downtown last Tuesday when she suggested alternating weeks with the dog, and I stood my ground by offering to buy her out for $1,500 instead because that dog is the only thing that got me through the first three months of separation, has anyone else had to put a dollar value on something sentimental to avoid more fighting?

Buying her out for $1,500" sounds like you're treating the dog like a couch, not a living thing with its own needs.

and honestly it goes way deeper than that... $1500 for the "right" to rehome a dog you already have a bond with? that's basically putting a price tag on your whole relationship with the animal. like imagine telling a friend "yeah I had to pay my ex to keep seeing my dog" - sounds crazy when you say it out loud. makes me wonder if people do this with cats or hamsters too or if it's just dogs because they're seen as more "valuable" property. a living creature shouldn't have a market value tied to who gets to keep it happy and healthy.
