Rant: Old timer told me my EGT probe placement was boneheaded
I was at a diesel rally in Bakersfield last fall and this graybeard walks up to my 6.7 Powerstroke after hearing it idle. He points at my EGT gauge and says 'You put that probe post-turbo, you're reading happy numbers, not real numbers.' I argued with him for five minutes saying pre-turbo was too hard to drill. He just shook his head and walked off. Later that night I looked up the manual for my gauge kit and sure enough it said pre-turbo is the only way to get useful data for tuning. I spent the next weekend pulling the downpipe and redrilling into the manifold. Now my temps read 200 degrees hotter than they used to. I was basically guessing on fuel before. Has anyone else had to eat crow after ignoring a veteran's advice?

...and you know what, the old timer was probably right but I gotta say something about the manifold drilling thing. Pre-turbo doesn't have to mean drilling into the manifold itself, a lot of guys tap into the up pipe right before the turbo flange and get the same real temps without the hassle of pulling the whole manifold off. Honestly, I did the same thing on my 7.3 a few years back and thought I was clever until my buddy showed me his spot in the exhaust elbow and it read damn near identical. Tbh, the real lesson here isn't just about probe placement, it's that those old timers have burned themselves enough times to know what works and what doesn't. Ngl, I've eaten crow more times than I can count on stuff like that.
