Had to choose between a shop rebuild and buying a new injection pump for my old 7.3
My 2002 Ford 7.3 started running rough and losing power last week. I got quotes from a local shop in Nashville for a full rebuild at $4,200 or a reman pump from Diesel Care for $1,800. I went with the reman pump since the motor only has 180k miles and it runs smooth now, but I'm worried the injector tips might be next. Anyone else gamble on just the pump instead of the whole deal?

Oh boy, I gotta gently push back on one thing here. You say you "gambled" on just the pump over the whole deal, but in my experience 180k miles on a 7.3 is nothing. Those motors are barely broke in at that point. I've seen plenty of them go 300k plus on the original injectors if they had good oil changes. The reman pump was probably the smart play honestly. The shop rebuild at 4,200 bucks would have been mostly labor and markup on parts you probably didn't need yet. Your injector tips might be fine for another 50k or more if you keep clean oil in it. Take that with a grain of salt though, every truck is a little different.

Respectfully, I gotta disagree a bit. 180k on a 7.3 might be low miles for the block but those injectors do start getting tired around there, especially if the previous owner wasn't religious about oil changes.
