Had to choose between a cheaper apartment with a 45 minute commute or paying $300 more for something closer to work
I picked the closer one after three months of that drive. Started with the cheap place thinking I'd save money, but after burning through two gas tanks a week and missing my kid's bedtime three times, the math didn't add up. Anyone else do the drive vs. cost calculation and end up regretting the choice you made?

Wait, didn’t @grant.nina already say that same thing up there? Lol it’s spot on though, that “late to my own life” feeling hits way harder than a few hundred bucks ever will. I just think the commute tax is actually way bigger than people realize until you’re living it.

Cheaper place made me late to my own life. Not worth it.

grant.nina that's a really sharp way to put it, and I get that feeling of wasting time on a "deal." Can you dig into what "late to my own life" means for you, like was it a rent thing that kept you from saving or just a bad neighborhood that wrecked your schedule? I'm curious because I've seen people spend a ton of time commuting to save a buck (and end up burned out), but sometimes the tradeoff sneaks up on you. Really makes you wonder if the money saved is worth the hours you can't get back, doesn't it?
