The library scanner ate my 40 page document and I cried a little

Went to the main branch downtown to scan some old family letters for a project. The machine said 'scan complete' so I hit print. Out comes 12 pages of pure gray boxes, no text at all. The lady at the desk tried to help but the software locked up twice. I wasted 90 minutes in that building and got nothing. How do these public machines never get tested? Has anyone else had a total fail with those self-service scanners?
