Told a 'pregnant pause' joke at my sister's baby shower, silence was brutal

Had to pick between cracking a joke or staying quiet when my sister opened the weird onesie gift. I chose the joke, said something about 'nine months of construction' and the room went dead quiet for like 15 seconds. My mom shot me the look from across the table in Denver, and my sister just stared at her plate. Anyone else ever misjudge a crowd that bad or was it just me?
