My router's firmware update turned my whole home network upside down

Last month I finally hit update on my router after putting it off for like 2 years. The admin page kept nagging me about security patches but I figured my network was fine, nothing important on it. After doing it, the whole thing reset to factory settings and I had to set up my WiFi name and password from scratch. My smart plugs and the garage door opener all lost their connection, took me a whole Saturday afternoon to get everything re-paired. The weird part is that the new firmware fixed a bunch of weird lag spikes I used to get when streaming from my bedroom. I checked the release notes and there were 14 fixes for known vulnerabilities, some of them from 2021. Has anyone else avoided updates out of laziness and then had the network actually run better after the hassle? How do you decide when a firmware update is worth the pain?}

Totally been there, same thing happened to me last year and it was worth every minute of re-pairing!
