My 2FA app almost got me locked out of my own email

I set up Google Authenticator on my phone last year and never wrote down the backup codes, then my phone died on a trip to Austin last month. The recovery process through my provider took 4 days and a bunch of ID scans, which felt insane for my personal account. Anyone else keep a physical copy of those codes now, or am I the only one who learned this the hard way?

Same thing happened to me last year, now I keep backup codes in my wallet and my glove box.
