Decided between a paid VPN and a free one, paid saved my data

Last month I was choosing between NordVPN for $100 a year and a free VPN called HotSpot Shield. I went with Nord because I read free ones sell your data. Two weeks later, I saw my friend's free VPN was logging all her browsing and selling it to advertisers. Has anyone else gotten burned by a free VPN?

You tried the free one for a bit? I almost did the same thing. Saw my ISP throttle everything so I just paid upfront and never looked back. Those free ones always find a way to cash in somewhere else.

Wait, your friend's VPN was actually logging and selling her browsing history?" That's crazy. I knew they probably did something shady but seeing it in black and white like that... I guess I got lucky picking the paid one. Makes you wonder what else those free apps are doing in the background. I've seen some that ask for camera permissions and stuff, which is just weird.

One time I downloaded a "free flashlight" app and it asked for my contacts and location. Paid VPNs aren't perfect either though, I've heard some of them get bought out and change their privacy policies down the line. Always check what you're signing up for, nobody gives away something for nothing.
