Spent 2 hours rewriting a prompt because I forgot one rule
I was working on a writing prompt about a haunted lighthouse and thought I had it perfect. But I forgot to include a specific deadline for the scene to play out, and the whole story fell flat until I added it. It took me a full 2 hours to figure out why my beta readers were bored. Anyone else get stuck on tiny details that wreck your whole flow?

my whole story fell flat until i added it" - but that's the thing, it wasn't the deadline that fixed your story. deadlines aren't really about time, they're about tension. your readers were bored because the stakes weren't clear, not because they were checking their watches. a deadline is just a tool to create urgency, but the problem was probably that the character had no reason to care about the lighthouse at all. next time try asking yourself what the character would lose if they failed, not just when they need to finish.

Used to roll my eyes at people obsessing over tension and stakes, always figured a good enough scene just worked. But you're right, it's not the deadline itself that does the work, it's the character having something to lose. Gonna chew on that next time I'm stuck.
