My fantasy world map took me 18 months to finish because I kept changing the river systems

I spent a full year building this continent with mountain ranges and biomes, but the rivers just looked wrong every time I tried to trace them from source to sea. Has anyone else spent way too long on map geography for a story that hasn't even been written yet?

Rivers eroding backwards from the coast might actually fix your problem faster than tracing them from the mountains.

Honestly, wait, rivers can erode backwards? That sounds like something out of a sci-fi movie or something. I thought erosion just happened downhill all the time, I never even considered it working in reverse. That completely messes with how I pictured rivers working, my brain is having a hard time wrapping around this whole backwards erosion thing.

@lisa5 that backwards erosion tip is solid and honestly a lifesaver.
