TIL my old boss in Bakersfield was right about hand signals vs radios
Had a chat last week with a guy named Ray who ran cranes out at a yard in Bakersfield for 22 years. He told me he banned radios on blind picks after a near miss in '08 when a crew got a garbled call and almost swung a bundle into a trench. I always figured radios were just the newer, better way, but he made me think about how a good hand signal never cuts out or gets stepped on. Any of you run hand signals on purpose even when a radio is sitting right there?
