Why does nobody teach proper brush angle for fine hair?

I see stylists all the time holding their round brush flat against the scalp when blow drying fine hair. That kills volume before you even start. At the Paul Mitchell school in Chicago back in 2017, my instructor made us practice at a 45 degree lift minimum. Has anyone else noticed how many grads miss this basic trick?

Hang on, is it really that serious though? I've been doing hair for like fifteen years and I never got that "no flat brushing" rule drilled into me, and my fine-haired clients seem fine with their volume. Maybe it's a school-specific thing, like some places are super strict about technique and others just let you figure it out on the job. I've seen stylists do the flat brush thing and get great results with the right product and a good blow dryer. Feels like one of those rules that sounds good in class but doesn't always matter in the real world.

Grab that brush and angle it up 45 degrees right at the root - you'll see the lift instantly. Did your instructors harp on the "no flat brushing" rule as much as mine did?
