A stranger's comment about my burnt pancakes still haunts me

Last spring I was in a diner in Boise, trying to flip my own pancakes on a griddle at a friend's birthday brunch. I was so focused on showing off that I let the heat climb too high, and the bottoms came out black as tar. This older guy two seats down watched the whole thing, then pointed and said, 'Honey, those look like hockey pucks with a tan.' He laughed, but it stuck with me in a way that's honestly weird. I think it's because I'd been bragging about my breakfast skills for weeks, and boom, instant reality check. Even now, I can't make pancakes without hearing his voice, and I check the heat like five times. Has anyone else had a random person's offhand joke completely kill their cooking confidence?
