Am I the only one who switched from eyeballing wet pads to using a squeegee on every pour
In my early days I would just dump water on the slab and hope the shine looked right, and one time in Phoenix I flooded a 20x30 patio so bad the surface turned chalky and the homeowner noticed before I did. About two years back a finisher named Ray showed me a 24 inch squeegee and told me to pull water once and check the sheen at the edge, and it slowed me down but the finish came out way more even. Now I keep a squeegee in my hand for every pour and I can see the bleed water move instead of guessing. Has anyone else changed how they read wet concrete, or am I late to this one?
Learned that trick the hard way too, watching the bleed water actually move across the slab tells you way more than a shine ever will. Once you start pulling with the squeegee you can spot a low spot or a wet batch before it sets up on you. Takes longer but I'd rather drag it than tear out a chalky patio again.
