PSA: The office cat unplugged my server rack and nobody noticed for 3 hours

Walked into work Monday morning and found the entire file server down because a stray cat had pulled the power cord out of the UPS. Had to restore from backup while explaining to my boss that yes, a cat caused our 3 hour downtime. Anyone else ever had an animal mess with your equipment?

Oh man, that's rough. I mean, my dog once ate the power cord to our router while I was in the other room making coffee. Came back to find him wagging his tail with sparks flying out of his mouth. Had to explain the 45 minute outage to the whole team and my boss just stared at me like I was the one who chewed through it. Ever find yourself paranoid about every stray animal that walks by the office now?

Heard a story on a podcast once where a guy's cat took down a whole server room, so @grant.nina you're definitely not alone.

Oh man, you just brought back a memory I've been trying to repress. I had a similar thing happen a few years back, but it was a squirrel that got into our server room through a ceiling tile. That little critter managed to knock an external hard drive off a shelf and it landed right on the power strip, turning everything off. Took us two hours to figure out why the backup server was offline. My boss still brings it up every time there's a power outage joke. You're not wrong about being paranoid either, I still get nervous anytime I see a bird land on the roof vent near the AC unit.
