A client told me my cable management was 'too pretty' and now I changed how I route everything

Last month a guy at a small office in Denver said my ziptie job looked nice but made it impossible to swap drives. He was right. I stopped using so many ties and now I just use velcro straps and leave some slack. Has anyone else had to unlearn the whole 'make it look perfect' thing?

too pretty" is exactly right - I learned the same way after a client got frustrated.

The weird part nobody talks about is how "pretty" designs actually make clients trust you less. I've noticed this pattern where the cleaner and more polished something looks, the more they assume you're hiding something or overcharging for fluff. They start questioning every little detail because it looks too deliberate. Ugly wireframes get approved way faster because they look like real work in progress. Same thing happens with proposals - a simple text document gets signed quicker than something with nice formatting. Clients see pretty and think "marketing fluff" instead of "problem solved".
