Old timer diver told me to always check my own gear, not trust the tender

I got lazy on a job off the coast of Galveston a few months back and let the tender prep my tank. Ended up with a faulty valve that nearly cut my air at 40 feet. Has anyone else had a close call from not double checking their own setup?

Feel that brother, that's a scary situation and I'm glad you made it up okay. Ive had a similar scare with a pressure gauge reading wrong on a deep dive out of a pier in the Gulf. That kind of thing really sticks with you and makes you paranoid about every little detail from now on.

Buddy of mine out of Port O'Connor skipped his pre-dive check because he was running late. Got in the water and realized his inflator hose wasn't clipped properly, started dumping air and he had to do a frantic buoyancy control exercise just to stay neutral. He tells that story every time someone mentions skipping a gear check.

Blew my pre-dive check once, looked like I was fighting a dolphin to get my BCD working.
