Nearly lost a fin off the back deck in Galveston last week, watch your gear before you splash
Last Tuesday on a shallow dock job near Galveston, I watched a green hat's fin strap pop loose right as his tender was walking him to the edge. The thing slid off the deck and sank in about 12 feet, and we burned 20 minutes of a tight morning window getting it back with a grapnel. I've seen it happen mostly on older rubber straps that look fine until they get wet and stretch. Now I make my guys do a quick yank test on fins, mask, and weight belt before every descent, takes 30 seconds. Anyone else have a near-miss story like that, or a better way to check gear fast?
Rubber straps don't really stretch from water, they dry rot and crack. The yank test is good though. Do it dry before you even load the boat, that's when you can actually see the cracks.
