Overheard a guy at my local shop say 'real fans only read the classics, not this new woke stuff'. That got me thinking about gatekeeping in our hobby.

Gatekeeping just makes the hobby smaller. New stories can be classics too, they just need time. It is a weird way to feel special about reading books.

But what if some gatekeeping is just about keeping a shared meaning alive? When everything is called a classic, doesn't that word stop meaning anything? It feels like we're losing the common ground that lets people talk about books in the first place.
