Vent: my French press coffee came out weak for 2 weeks and I finally figured out why
I got a new French press about a month ago and could not figure out why my cup kept tasting thin and watery, even with the same beans I always buy from the place on 5th Street. I was using 2 scoops of ground coffee for a 12 ounce press like always, but the brew kept coming out sad. Turns out my old grinder was set way too coarse, like breadcrumb coarse, and the water was just running right past the grounds. I dropped it down to a medium grind and bumped the water temp to about 200 degrees, and the difference was wild, same beans, same press, totally different cup. Also learned I was pressing too fast, which stirred up the grit and made it bitter on top of weak. If you have a press that keeps letting you down, check your grind size first before you blame the beans. Anyone else get fooled by a grinder setting they forgot to change?
