Why I stopped telling beginners to "just pick a language and build something"
I was sitting in the break room at work two weeks ago and this kid on my crew, 19, says he tried to learn Python but quit after a couple days because he couldn't figure out what to build. I had been telling people for a while that you should just pick a language and start making stuff, but hearing him say that made me realize the advice is kinda hollow when you don't even know what's possible yet. So now I tell people to spend the first week just copying small projects from a tutorial exactly, line by line, before trying anything on their own. Has anyone else changed how they explain this stuff to total beginners?
