My foreman said 'a good operator can run any machine' but I saw a guy wreck a part on a new 5-axis last week.
I'm starting to think some controls are just too different to jump into cold. What's your limit for trying a machine you've never seen before?

That saying gets thrown around a lot. Saw a guy try to run a new wire EDM with zero training and it was a mess. Controls can be totally different. The limit is probably if you need the manual just to turn it on, you should wait for a quick run-down. Wrecking a part is one thing, but crashing a machine is a whole different bill.
