Just realized torque specs on the insert screws made a 0.003" difference on my finish, and nobody at my shop believed me
Everyone at my shop says you just snug the insert screws down with the little T-handle and move on, and for two years I did exactly that. Three weeks ago I started using a small inch-pound torque wrench on my face mill inserts after reading a Sandvik rep talk about uneven clamping, and my surface finish went from 58 Ra to about 38 Ra on 4140 steel. First part ran Monday, one insert had backed off maybe a quarter turn from where I thought it was tight. My lead still says I am overthinking it and the T-handle is plenty. Has anyone else actually measured the difference, or am I the only guy in the shop chasing this?
