Guy running the Okuma at the shop next door told me he hasn't touched an offset in 3 weeks, and it's been bugging me
I was standing outside on a smoke break Tuesday when the operator from the shop next door started chatting with me. He runs an Okuma lathe, and he mentioned he hadn't changed a single offset in about 3 weeks. At first I figured he was just doing easy jobs, but he said no, it's the same mix of aluminum and steel parts we run. He said his trick is touching off every tool at the start of a run and logging the numbers on a card taped to the machine, no matter how rushed he is. Meanwhile I'm chasing tenths all day, tweaking offsets on my Haas every few parts like it's going out of style. I tried his card thing on a run of 200 bushings last week and only had to nudge one offset the whole shift, which honestly annoyed me more than it should. So is he onto something real here, or did he just get lucky with some nice stock and a machine that holds size better than mine? What's your record for running a job without touching an offset?
