The morning the sump pump quit during that derecho in Iowa
I was in my basement in Des Moines during that storm last June, water rising fast, and the backup battery was dead from a power flicker the day before. Had to bail 40 gallons by hand with a bucket while yelling at my wife to grab the shop vac. Anyone else have a backup system fail at the worst possible time?

Pretty sure that was actually early July not June, I remember because my sump pump died during a small rainstorm right before that and I had just replaced the battery.

Oh totally, you are spot on with July. I remember because my neighbor's basement flooded during a freak thunderstorm right around then and he was so mad about the timing (his own pump had died the month before and he ignored it). That small rainstorm you mentioned was a real pain for anyone with older equipment, mine had been acting finicky all spring until I finally gave in and replaced it after that same storm.
