I looked up the numbers on my old fridge and the energy use was wild

My fridge is from 2005, and I finally checked the yellow EnergyGuide sticker. It said it uses about 700 kWh a year. I looked up a new, efficient model and it was under 400 kWh. That's over 300 kWh less, which is like running a TV non-stop for months. I found this out on the Energy Star website when I was trying to see if a repair was worth it. Has anyone else been surprised by how much an old appliance really uses?

but that's still not a ton of power in the grand scheme...

Wait, is 300 kWh even that big of a deal on your bill? That's like what, maybe thirty bucks a year? The cost of a new fridge would take forever to pay back. Sometimes this energy stuff feels overblown.

Honestly, that's a huge difference. My old chest freezer was like that, it was basically a second power bill. Seeing the actual numbers really makes you think about all the old stuff humming away in the house.
