The 1970s shag carpet I pulled up had a perfect rectangle of clean floor underneath where a rug sat for 30 years

The homeowner said her mom never moved that area rug. The difference between the stained, matted shag and the bright original floor was like night and day. Anyone else find weird time capsules under old carpet?

Honestly that sounds kind of disappointing. Pulling up old carpet and finding a perfect rectangle just means you have to do more work now. That clean spot is going to stick out like a sore thumb against the worn out floor around it. You either have to refinish the whole thing or live with a weird bright patch. Sometimes the time capsule just shows you how much everything else has aged.

We used a light sanding on the whole floor and one coat of poly. It blended pretty well without a full refinish.

Sand the whole floor with a orbital sander and 80 grit, it'll knock down that bright rectangle and match the patina. That's what I did when I pulled up a giant area rug in my place and it looked way worse than you're picturing. Hit it with a coat of satin poly after and it'll blend in enough that nobody notices but you.
