Old foreman in Boise swore by a chalk line, I ignored him for 5 jobs

He said mark every seam before you cut, I thought it was a waste of time, then last month I mismeasured a 14 foot hallway and had to rip up 60 bucks of carpet, has anyone else learned that the slow way is the fast way?
