Can we talk about how the Cookie Monster used to have sharp teeth and full sentences

I pulled up a 1970 clip of Cookie Monster on YouTube last week and his teeth were these jagged pointy things while he barked out whole paragraphs about wanting cookies. By the mid 80s someone softened him into the round mouthed googly guy who only says me want cookie, and I guess parents wrote in scared of him. Does anyone know if there was an actual letter campaign that forced the change, or did the writers just do it on their own?
