I finally figured out why arguing in the comments never works after getting piled on for a dumb joke in a Facebook group

I got dogpiled in a 12,000 member Facebook group last week over a joke that didn't land, and 40+ comments later I realized nobody was actually reading my replies, they were just reacting to the screenshot someone reposted. If you want to defend yourself in a pile-on, say your piece once, then log off, because every extra comment just gives people more to clip out of context. Has anyone else noticed that the people who stay calm and post one reply come out way better than the ones who argue for hours?
