Was sure the cheap tarp would leak but it held up all 4 days in that Maine downpour

Last month I bought a $12 blue tarp from Home Depot instead of the $60 waterproof one everyone online swears by. Figured I'd be patching holes by hour 2. We got slammed with rain near Acadia for a full weekend. Tent stayed bone dry. I even used it as a ground cover under the tent too. Now I'm wondering if I got lucky or if the expensive stuff is just hype. Anyone else had a cheap tarp surprise them?

$12 blue tarp from Home Depot" - haha that's basically my entire camping philosophy. I buy the cheapest thing and pray it doesn't fail spectacularly while I'm stuck in the woods. Glad yours worked out, mine usually end up with a mysterious tear by breakfast.

Wait, is that pretty much the same kind of tarp I grabbed? I literally bought that exact same one from Home Depot last spring for a camping trip and was so stressed the whole time. I mean, I was waiting for a huge rip or for the grommets to just pull right out of the plastic. But we had crazy wind and rain in the Whites and it didn’t budge, not a single leak. It’s honestly made me feel a little silly for ever spending more on the fancy ones, idk if I just got lucky too or what.
