Thought a $12 headlamp was all I needed for night hikes, then my buddy's cheap one died 2 miles from the trailhead
I always figured a basic $12 headlamp from the hardware store was fine for camping since I only use it to find the bathroom at night. Two weeks ago my buddy and I were hiking back from a lake near Bend and his cheap light flickered out about 2 miles from the truck, so we finished the walk using my phone screen. That got me reading reviews for a real one and I grabbed a rechargeable lamp rated for 400 lumens with a red mode for about $40. Used it last weekend and the difference is nuts, I could see roots and rocks clear as day and the battery still showed full after 4 hours. Now I'm wondering if I should also upgrade my lantern or if that's just me getting carried away. What's your cutoff price for a headlamp you actually trust in the dark?
