Serious question, why do people keep testing water filters by chugging straight from a creek?
I saw a guy at a campsite near Bend last month fill his bottle from a muddy little stream and drink it right there to prove his filter worked, and he was sick for two days. What he should have done is filter first and then check the flow rate or use a dye test, because drinking untreated water does not actually test anything except your stomach. Am I wrong for telling people this at the trailhead, or is there a real reason folks still do it?
Does it count as testing if the test is just whether you get sick later? I used to figure that was the whole point, like a real world stress test, but then I watched a buddy do it on the Deschutes and spend a day in his tent. Now I just filter, check the flow, and let the dye do the talking, because your gut is a bad lab partner.
