My brother insisted I buy a $15 tarp instead of a $50 tent footprint...
That cheap tarp shredded on the second night and I woke up soaked in a puddle at Moosehead Lake. Has anyone else had a supposedly budget-friendly gear tip totally backfire on them?

Brother was right to push the cheap tarp - $15 is way more sensible than $50 for something you'll step on. A tarp tears because you didn't prep the ground right or set it up loose enough to handle wind. User error is way more common than gear failure in these stories lol.

Are you saying prep or setup matters more for long term tarp life...?

Mostly agree but wind damage usually happens when you stake it too tight, not too loose. A little slack lets it flex instead of ripping.
