My $200 hiking boots lost to a $30 pair from the farm store

I did the Appalachian Trail section near Gatlinburg last month and my fancy boots blistered me by mile 6. Meanwhile my buddy wore those cheap rubber boots from Tractor Supply and his feet were fine the whole 18 miles. I spent 3 days taping my heels while he just walked. That got me thinking, sometimes the marketing hype is the real junk, not the product. Has anyone else found that budget gear beats the expensive stuff when you actually put it to work?

You ever see a guy spend $400 on a tent then watch it flood out in a light rain? My buddy did that. His fancy ultralight tent leaked like a sieve at the creek crossing. Meanwhile my $60 tarp shelter stayed dry. He spent the night in the car. I slept fine. Sometimes you're just paying for the name.
