Walk-in cooler broke at 2 PM on a Saturday, lost almost $800 of product

Was working a shift at a shop in Portland when the cooler just died. Temp hit 50 by the time I noticed. Had to toss about 60 lbs of prime cuts and ground beef. Owner blamed me for not checking it earlier. Now I check the temp log every hour on the dot. Anyone else have a boss who refuses to upgrade old equipment?

Buddy of mine lost a whole walk-in once and the owner made him pay for everything.

Sixty pounds of prime cuts is a rough Saturday.

That's a lot of weight to lose in one sitting, no question. But what I'm wondering is how often that happens to you, honestly. Like is this a once a month problem or a every Saturday kind of thing? Because if it's the latter, your supplier or your prep system might need a second look. Your mileage may vary but losing sixty pounds of anything on a regular basis means something in the workflow is off. I'd be asking myself if the order numbers match up or if the staff is just being heavy handed with the trim.
