That one contractor's advice about ripping 2x4s saved me $300 today

Last month a framing guy at the lumber yard told me to always rip my own furring strips instead of buying the pre-cut bundles. I figured he was just lazy, so I ignored him. Then my siding job needed 30 strips and the store wanted $1.10 each for the skinny ones, while a 2x4 cost me $8. Today I ripped 32 strips in about 40 minutes with my table saw. Anyone else find that cutting your own stock almost always beats the pre-made price, or was this guy just lucky?

That $300 profit in 40 minutes is the same pattern I see at the grocery store with whole chickens versus cut-up parts, you always pay extra for someone else's labor.
