My brother-in-law at a cookout told me about his 'no spend' weekends

We were grilling at his place in Madison last month, and he said him and his wife just don't spend any money from Friday night to Monday morning. They plan free stuff like hikes or board games. He said it saved them almost $80 a week on takeout and random trips to the store. It sounded so simple, but I never thought to just block off whole days like that. Has anyone else tried something like this and stuck with it?

Honestly that sounds like a self-imposed prison sentence. Life's too short to plan every single weekend around not spending a dollar. What's the point of saving that money if you never let yourself enjoy it?

My neighborhood Facebook group has a "free weekend" thread every month. People post about their no spend plans, like library visits or park concerts. It shows how many people are quietly cutting back on spending without making a big deal about it.

Saw a line at the free community yoga in the park last Saturday that was longer than the one at the coffee shop. Spencerm46 has a point about not making life a prison, but I get masonbell's vibe too. It's not about being cheap, it's a different way to find what's going on. My feed is full of paid brunch ads, but the real crowd is at the library lecture or the free museum day. Feels like a quiet pushback against everything having a price tag.
