Just realized my 'emergency fund' was way too small
I was at a coffee shop in Austin last month when my car's transmission died, and the repair quote came in at $2,800 on the spot. My savings only had $2,000 in it, which left me scrambling to borrow from my sister to cover the rest. How do you guys figure out the right amount to stash away for actual emergencies?

Oh man, that's a rough way to learn that lesson! I've been there, my "emergency fund" was basically just "hey I hope nothing too expensive breaks this month" money for way too long. What finally clicked for me was thinking about the worst case scenarios that could actually happen, not just the ones that seem unlikely. I sat down and made a list of stuff like car repairs, a broken fridge, a big medical bill, and then added up the most expensive ones. Honestly, I still haven't hit my goal yet, but aiming for at least $5,000 to $7,000 feels way more realistic than the generic "3 months of expenses" advice everyone throws around. Plus, it helps knowing I'm not one transmission failure away from calling my sister again!

Did you set that $5,000 target based on actual repair quotes or just a guess?
