Coffee shop near work had a 50 cent fee for card payments, so now I carry cash

I was at Brews & Buns downtown last Tuesday when my usual $3.50 cold brew rang up as $4.00. The barista pointed to a tiny sign by the register about the surcharge they added a month ago. Now I stop at the ATM across the street once a week grab $20 and it covers my coffee runs without the extra fee stealing my change. Has anyone else dodged a sneaky charge like this at a local spot?

That sign about a tiny surcharge got me. My friend Laura hit the same thing at Bean Scene on Elm. She bought her usual latte and it jumped from $4.25 to $4.80 because of the card fee plus tax on the fee. Now she keeps a roll of quarters in her glovebox just for coffee money.

A roll of quarters is the real pro move, honestly. My buddy Dan keeps a full coin pouch in his truck console and just grabs handfuls for random gas station snacks and coffee. Saves him the ATM fees too, since most places around here don't charge for cash. It's funny how a 50 cent fee gets you to change your whole routine, but once you do it you wonder why you didn't sooner.
